Rockhaven community consultation

The national housing and cost of living crisis has led to an increase in people experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough rough in the Rockhampton region. As more people need support, the pressure on existing social, affordable and crisis accommodation in Rockhampton is being stretched further.

Although Rockhampton Regional Council has always worked to support our community, to date Council has not previously played a direct role supporting people experiencing homelessness.

By establishing ‘Rockhaven’ as a place for people to temporarily camp, this site could provide a safe haven for families and people struggling to find a home or waiting to secure housing. It could provide access to essential amenities for temporary camping.

The council is seeking feedback on the suitability of repurposing the Music Bowl site to serve as a 'Rockhaven'. As the Music Bowl is no longer suitable for performances or events, this much-loved community facility could serve some of Rockhampton’s most vulnerable residents.

Your views on this draft proposal will help us to understand:

  • What the community thinks about Council’s draft proposal to provide a dedicated place for people experiencing homelessness to temporarily camp?

  • The suitability of the Music Bowl to serve as a Rockhaven or temporary camping place

  • If this site is considered suitable, what design, services and other matters need to be addressed, so it can successfully provide a safe place for people to temporarily camp when experiencing homelessness?

Please take a few minutes to complete community survey to share your views on the project.
