Canning Street reconstruction

Rockhampton Regional Council is undertaking reconstruction works on Canning Street, from Voss Street to Cambridge Street, to improve safety, road quality, and pedestrian access in the area.

Whether you're walking, cycling, or driving around Albert Street, Canning Street, Voss Street, or Cambridge Street, these improvements will benefit you.

These include:

  • Safer pedestrian crossings with new two-metre-wide refuge islands on Albert and Canning Streets.
  • Wider footpaths on both sides of Canning Street for better accessibility, especially for people with mobility aids.
  • Improved traffic flow and safety with new turning lanes, extended medians, and controlled access at key intersections.
  • Better emergency department access with dedicated turning lanes and safer entry/exit points.

Key upgrades include:

  • New two-metre-wide pedestrian refuge crossings on both Albert Street and Canning Street to make crossing safer and easier.
  • Wider footpaths on both sides of Canning Street, improving accessibility for all pedestrians, including those with mobility challenges.
  • Traffic flow and safety improvements, including restricted turning movements at Voss Street, an extended median island, and left-in/left-out access only at Cambridge Street with rumble bars to slow vehicles. A U-turn facility will be provided on Cambridge Street for cars only.
  • Rockhampton Hospital Emergency Department access upgrades, including a new right-turn lane from the North Street roundabout and left-turn-only exit from the emergency department.
  • New right-turn lane from Canning Street onto Albert Street.
  • Wider shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides of Canning Street, replacing existing on-street bicycle lanes for improved safety and comfort.
  • To complete these works safely, Canning Street will be reduced to single-lane access for the duration of the project. Work is expected to begin in November and take approximately 12 months, weather and ground conditions permitting.

Access to Hospital and Carpark During Roadworks

During the Canning Street roadworks, please access the Rockhampton Hospital Emergency Department and the multi-storey carpark via the North Street roundabout. This temporary change will help keep everyone safe and ensure continued access while upgrades are underway.
