Rockhampton Sports Precinct Project

Welcome to the Rockhampton Sports Precinct Project page! This is your hub for information, updates and opportunities to have your say on this exciting development.

About the Project

Rockhampton Regional Council is delivering a new regional sporting precinct to meet our growing community’s sporting and recreational needs. This long-term vision aims to strengthen our region’s reputation as the sporting capital of Central Queensland and provide additional sport, recreation and open space in North Rockhampton.

With $47 million in funding from the Queensland Government, we’re excited to bring this project to life, starting with a new home for Rockhampton Netball.

  • $5 million – Design development and planning approval
  • $42 million – Construction of Stage 1

What is the Rockhampton Sports Precinct?

The Rockhampton Sports Precinct will be a contemporary, flood-free, regional-scale multipurpose sports precinct designed to host a wide range of activities and events. The masterplan ensures cross-utilisation of facilities, creating a space that supports community sport, athlete development and major events.

The precinct spans approximately 26 hectares, located on the eastern side of CQUniversity’s campus along Norman Road. It will be delivered in stages as funding becomes available.

What is included in Stage 1?

Stage 1, supported by Queensland Government funding, will deliver a new home for Netball in Rockhampton, including:

  • 16 fit-for-purpose outdoor netball courts
  • Clubhouse, changerooms, amenities, and parking
  • Upgraded roads and intersections on Norman Road at Foulkes Street
  • A new park, play space, parklands, and public amenities

Stage 1 – Home for Netball Features

16 outdoor courts with lighting to support games and training, including a ‘show’ court for high-level fixtures.

Club buildings will include:

  • Public amenities
  • Player changerooms and amenities
  • Netball administration office
  • First aid room
  • Umpires’ room
  • Canteen
  • Multipurpose room

Recreational Park (youth-themed, catering to all ages) will include:

  • Multipurpose sports court (futsal, basketball, volleyball)
  • Pickleball courts
  • Handball and outdoor table tennis
  • Parkour
  • Climbing/bouldering walls
  • Rebound sports wall
  • Play tower
  • Racing slides
  • Fitness nodes
  • Extensive greening and tree planting
  • Informal grassed seating areas
  • Shaded hard seating areas
  • Projector wall

Stage 1 infrastructure works include:

  • Water
  • Stormwater drainage
  • Sewer
  • Electricity
  • Telecommunications
  • Roads

What does the full Masterplan include?

The RSP Masterplan was developed in partnership with CQUniversity and shaped through extensive community input.

The long-term vision includes:

  • 16-court netball precinct with amenities and clubhouse
  • 6-court indoor sports centre with café, gym, and allied health services
  • 3 multi-use winged turf ovals with amenities and clubhouse (6 rugby fields / 3 AFL-sized ovals)
  • Track and field facilities
  • Active recreation parklands and playgrounds
  • Footpaths, access roads and car parking throughout the precinct

Council will continue working with sporting associations and clubs to refine future staging, governance arrangements and timeframes. Future components are currently unfunded but will be designed to a ‘shovel-ready’ state, allowing staged delivery based on priorities and budget. As each component is designed, we will announce its features.

Environmental Considerations

The RSP site is currently heavily vegetated, and we’re committed to preserving and enhancing its natural character. The design aims to:

  • Retain as much existing vegetation as possible
  • Reintroduce vegetation to support passive cooling, reduce heat island effects, and provide ecological benefits
  • Maintain a natural “open woodland” feel across the site

As part of our tree planting strategy, for every tree removed, we’ll plant 10 new trees. We estimate around 1,800 trees will be planted across the precinct.

Why this matters to you

This precinct is designed to benefit the entire community by providing:

  • A new, flood-free home for Rockhampton Netball
  • More opportunities for athlete development across multiple sports
  • Improved community open spaces and active recreation facilities
  • The potential to attract state and regional sporting competitions and major events

Netball is one of Queensland’s largest participation sports, and this precinct will support its growth in Rockhampton while also catering to other sports and recreational activities.
